T-Rex 600 Electric Helicopters

photo of t rex helicopterThe electric T-Rex helis look and fly nearly the same as their nitro counterparts.  But they don’t require fuel, they’re quieter, and they don’t smoke up the place.  Rather than repeating discussion of the nitro models, I’ll focus here on what’s in the various packages, plus where to buy ‘em.

About Batteries

But first a little bit about battery-powered helis.  The electric Trex 600s may not have any emissions, but they’re way to big for any indoor flying.  Except maybe in the Astrodome ;-)  Although you’re not buying fuel and the cost of electricity for charging is negligible, electric heli flying still isn’t cheap.  High-performance batteries are expensive, and they have a limited number of charge-discharge cycles.   You’ll need pretty much the same battery for the electronics as you would for a nitro.  But the main LiPo battery will set you back over a hundred dollars for a quality pack.  Generally the more expensive batteries will last for more flights (charge/discharge cycles).  With big electric helicopterss like the Trex600e you’re talking roughly a dollar per flight in eventual battery replacement.

T-rex 600 ESP Super Combo

All of the 600 packages are un-assembled, and will take an experienced flyer around 10 hours of assembly and set-up time.  All use a flybar for blade stabilization.

The ESP superior combo is the most complete package.  It features carbon fiber blades, fiberglass canopy, and a carbon fiber frame.  Like the nitro versions it has excellent balance, stability, and smoothness.  The electric motor is actually more responsive in terms of throttle changes, but this heli does have a bit less power than a nitro.  Some people modify the frame for a more powerful motor, and this also requires a ESP (electronic speed control) upgrade as well.

The difference between the KX1016012 and KX1016013 part numbers is just the color.  Unlike many packages, these do include the electric motor.  Here’s what’s included:

  • carbon fiber blades (600D)
  • standard servos (3, DS610)
  • head-lock gyro (GP780, with servo)
  • ESC (RCE-BL100G, governor mode)
  • regulator (BEC, 2in1)
  • battery (7.4 V 1900 maH lipo, for flight electronics)
    motor (RCM-BL600M)

So pretty much all you need to add is the motor battery and a charger.  Plus, of course, a 6+ channel transmitter and receiver.

Other Electric T Rex Helicopter Packages

The T-rex 600e cF Combo (KX160002A) does not include blades, headlock gyro, and headlock servo.  The ESC is the RCM-BL75G, the battery is 1100 mah, and the motor is a 600L.

The 600e CF kit (also KX16002A) is pretty bare-bones.  You’ll need your own blades, all servos, head-lock gyro, ESC, electronics battery and motor.

Finally the T-rex 600e GF Combo (KX160006A) also excludes blades, servos, and gyro.  The GF indicates a fiberglass frame.  The motor is a 650L, electronics battery is 1900 maH, voltage regulator is 2in1, and the electronic speed control is a RCE-BL100G. The kit version drops the ESC, voltage regulator, electronics battery, and motor.

Electric 600 Helicopters Wrap-Up

Surprisingly, flight times for electric helis are quit similar to those of nitros, roughly 10 minutes.  You’ll get faster response on the throttle, but a bit less power on the top end.  You’ll avoid the hazard of fuel and the emissions of a 2-stroke engine.  But battery replacement still means a cost of around a dollar per flight.  Like all 600-series T rex helicopters these electrics are known for good quality, reasonable price, and more importantly they’re known for their stability as well as acrobatic capabilities.

Trex 600 Best in Class

The Align Trex 600 is one of the finest flying machines you’ll find anywhere.  Here we’ll discuss some 600N Nitro kits.

TRex 600 Nitro LE Flybarless

The 600s are huge, with a main rotor of over 4 feet.  They’re ideal for the intermediate to advanced flyer.  Although big it’s surprisingly light, weighing in at 7 pounds (excluding fuel).  This size and weight combination gives it great performance and agility plus high-visibility.  It’s also quite rugged.  It’s stability makes it easier to fly than some similar helis; it can easily handle 10 mph winds even with less experienced pilots.   As usual, I’ll be covering both the pros and the cons.

Features

Thess packages features a carbon-fiber frame to give the best strength at the lightest weight.  But like all carbon-fiber pieces, they must be replaced at the first sign of damage.  Even tiny cracks, which quickly propagate and lead to failure.  That’s the main reason I don’t recommend this package for beginners.  Things will get expensive if you’re not past the frequent-crash phase of learning.

Robot nroP

This heli is collective pitch (+/- 14 degrees), giving it superior control response.  It’s great for aerobatics, including 3D.  You can even vary the control response in your setup.  On the downside, this does make it a bit more complex mechanically.  This makes it more expensive and requires a bit more setup.  It’s flybarless, and this package comes with the electronics for a virtual flybar.

The  600 is known for it’s excellent airflow, improving engine cooling.  The 440 cc tank gives you about 10 minutes of flight time. This heli is 3’9” (1160 mm) long and 1’4” (410mm) high, with a 4’5” (1350 mm) main rotor.  Flight weight, excluding fuel, is 7 lb. (3.2 kg).

TRex 600 3G Flybarless LE Kit

This particular kit includes the electronics (except for a receiver) and boasts 12-bit data and a USB interface.  Everything’s at 300 Hz for fast responsiveness.

  • factory painted fiberglass canopy
  • 4 digital servos
  • RCE-G600 governor
  • 2in1 (dual) voltage regulator
  • programmable flybarless electronics, including 3-axis gyro sensor

Other 600 Packages

If you’d prefer a flybar system and already have all your electronics (including servos) you can cut the price in half by choosing the Nitro LE only (no electronics) package.  You can save a bit more by going old-school with the Nitro Pro white canopy kit.

Wrap Up

All three of these packages require significant assembly and set-up.  You’ll need to purchase an engine, receiver, and electronics battery.  You should also have a transmitter (RC control), battery charger, and blade balancer.  These are advanced helis, not RTF (ready-to-fly).

photo t-rex 600 yellowIt’s hard to fault this Align package, though I wouldn’t recommend it for beginners.  Some people are a bit turned off that Align is in Taiwan.  But they do have U.S. customer support and their T-Rex line is very popular.  As for quality, if you’ve ever seen a T-Rex up close, the machining and workmanship are works of art.  The Trex 600 in a fantastically performing flying machine for acrobatics and has a reputation for durability.

T Rex Helicopter – Great Heli for Great Flights

photo t-rex 600

T-Rex 600

Welcome to my Trex 600 blog.  It’s one of the best-liked helis ever.  I’m hoping this blog site will help people evaluate Align’s various T-Rex helis, and get started on a fantastic hobby.

Not only does Align offer various versions of the Trex 600, different retailers offer their own packages.  So far I’ve counted 9 different ones.  If you’re new to RC helis, or getting back into them after a long absence, this can be very confusing.  So let’s start by getting our bearing.

T Rex Helicopter Packages

If you’re used to inexpensive helis, you’ll be surprised that most “big boy” heli packages do not come with an engine.  This lets you put your favorite engine into your favorite helis.  If the package includes the term “super combo” it should include a motor.  If the package name says 600N or “nitro,” then it’s intended for a gas (nitro) fueled engine.  If it says 600E or ESP, then it’s intended for an electric motor.

Many packages skip necessary components, assuming you already have them from some other RC helicopter or prefer to pick and choose your own specific brands and types.  The following items are commonly left out.

  • motor
  • servos
  • governor
  • voltage regualtor
  • receiver
  • battery for flight electronics

Sometimes even main- and tail-blades are left out.  If the kit seems really inexpensive, it’s unlikely you’ve found a great bargain.  It more likely means the kit excludes most if not all of these.  Only ready-to-fly (RTF) combos have everything needed.  Even with “complete” kits you’ll probably still need a RC transmitter, battery charger, and blade balancer.  I haven’t found any RTF kits for the 600.

Flybar

Any given model may also come in a “flybarless” version.  A flybar system includes those paddle things under the rotor, plus other mechanical features, to provide added stability and control.  A flybarless system must include gyros and related electronics to do this virtually.  Well, you can fly without either, but it’s reallyhard.

Feature Choices

RC heli bodies and structural parts can be plastic, fiberglass,

aluminum, or carbon fiber.  Few large helis use plastic – it’s just not strong enough.  Carbon fiber provides the greatest strength at the lightest weight, and is usually designated by “CF” in the part number or package name.  But any damage, even tiny cracks, mean the part will soon fail.  So with crashes commonplace, aluminum or fiberglass parts are recommended for beginning and intermediate flyers.

For appearance, there are different canopies.  The least expensive are white and usually come with decals.  But it’s hard to properly place the decals so that they look good.  So there’s also different factory-painted canopies.

Wrap Up

Anyway, you should now see how various T Rex 600 packages can vary in price from just under $300 to just over $1,200.Unfortunately, the r/c helicopter industry isn’t know for discounts, especially on any t rex helicopter, but I’ll be keeping an eye out.
